Rimini, Italy – December 12, 2024. On December 11 and 12, the coordinator of the SICAPERMA Project presented the project's progress and objectives during the prestigious S3 Conference held in Rimini, Italy. The participation included a poster presentation detailing the main technical and scientific aspects of the project, generating significant interest among attendees.

More than 30 people expressed curiosity and enthusiasm about the results and impact of SICAPERMA. During the event, some attendees received additional information in the form of brochures that provided deeper insights into the project's features and its societal benefits.

Additionally, the project's impact was presented in terms of environmental sustainability, job creation, health benefits, and community development. SICAPERMA offers the first specialization area where Less Developed Regions can become leaders in EU resilience: Nd-Fe-B Recycling Technologies. The project aims to build a tech-based value chain that currently does not exist in Europe by leveraging the untapped technological capabilities of less developed regions. To achieve this, three collaborative demonstration pilots will be implemented, reaching market scale. These pilots will focus on:

  1. Demonstrating the dismantling and processing of multi-stream Permanent Magnets (PM).
  2. Innovative production of sintered and bonded magnets from recycled materials.
  3. Integration of recycled magnets into strategic EU applications, such as motors.

For the first time, these efforts will be connected in a comprehensive interregional EU demonstration ecosystem. This initiative addresses a critical challenge: a 30% reduction in Chinese exports jeopardizing 98% of the EU supply, threatening ecological and digital transitions.

Thanks to this breakthrough, the project plans to replicate PM recycling capabilities across less developed and other EU regions, with a target of 21 plants by 2050. By that time, the project aims to generate €1.8 billion in revenues, with a net margin of nearly €280 million, and create 5,900 direct jobs, excluding indirect employment. These efforts will significantly contribute to EU resilience and green and digital transitions, with projected environmental impacts including 95 million tons of CO2 savings by 2050.

The S3 Conference has proven to be an excellent platform for raising awareness about the project and fostering the exchange of ideas with other professionals and experts in the field. Such events not only allow the presentation of advancements but also help establish new collaborations and synergies.

The SICAPERMA Project continues to make steady progress, and this presentation represents another milestone in its journey toward achieving its objectives.

About the S3 Conference

The Smart Specialisation Strategies (S3) Conference 2024 is the flagship event for S3 stakeholders from across regions in EU Member States. It is organised by the DG for Regional Policy of the European Commission and the S3 CoP Secretariat, in partnership with Emilia-Romagna Region and with the support of the Municipality of Rimini.

S3 practitioners, experts, policymakers, and other key stakeholders will come together to engage in this bottom-up event to network, discuss S3 policy and implementation issues and exchange information and good practices. In addition, the S3 Conference will bring together regions recognised as Regional Innovation Valleys under the NEIA flagship action.
